Drawn from a cache of personal video recordings from the past 22 years, director Steve Loveridge has chronicled the remarkable journey of critically-acclaimed artist, M.I.A. – from refugee immigrant to pop star. Described by Sight & Sound as "a vibrant and valuable study that gets satisfyingly under the skin of the refugee turned pop star," Matangi / Maya / M.I.A. details life as Matangi, daughter of the founder of Sri Lanka's Tamil resistance; Maya, a precocious and creative immigrant teenager in London, and M.I.A., one of the most recognisable, outspoken and provocative voices in music today.
This weekend the Sundance award-winning documentary, Matangi / Maya / M.I.A. opens and the Showcase Cinema at West Quay has screenings on Friday and Sunday (28 and 30 September).
