Inspirational creative projects for Southampton's cultural quarterCity Eye is proud to collaborate in Art at the Heart, a partnership of cultural organisations working together to animate Southampton's Cultural Quarter. Our ambition is to excite and inspire Southampton’s residents and visitors with a range of performances, exhibitions and activities - including film and filmmaking!
Art at the Heart captured the public’s attention from the very beginning with its spectacular launch event, Midsummer Dreams, in June 2009. Over 7000 people gathered in the Guildhall Square in the heart of Southampton’s cultural quarter and watched in awe as a troupe of drummers, and one trapeze artist, took to the sky, creating an amazing human mobile against the backdrop of the Guildhall. The event, which was led by The Nuffield Theatre, in association with Southampton City Council, saw acclaimed French street theatre company Transe Express suspended above The Guildhall, hanging from a crane. As the 45 minute spectacular came to an end, the crowds were treated to a firework flourish by Walk the Plank. Many more events have followed; further 'spectaculars' alongside quieter activities with groups such as the retired partners of Tyrrell and Green which was the City's much loved John Lewis department store until it relocated to West Quay leaving the old building and site derelict. It is on the Tyrrell and Green site that the new arts complex is now emerging. The Art at the Heart film on the left offers a glimpse of many of the projects and events which have taken place. Art at the Heart partners currently include City Eye, John Hansard Gallery, Turner Sims, Art Asia, Nuffield and Mayflower. |
Art at the Heart @ Nuffield Playing FieldOur major project for the summer of 2014 was Art at the Heart @ Nuffield Playing Field, a summer festival of events at a unique pop-up venue located in Guildhall Square, at the heart of our Cultural Quarter. The festival and venue herald the exciting programme of art, film, events and activity which will be found in the new arts complex when it opens in 2016.
Across the first two weeks of August, City Eye presented a programme of films, fabulous theatre came from Nuffield and Mayflower, thrilling music from Turner Sims and Art Asia and intriguing art installation from John Hansard Gallery. For more details about the full programme of events visit Art at the Heart @ Nuffield Playing Field Art at the Heart was supported by Southampton City Council, The Sackler Foundation and Arts Council England. It formed part of the City’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. |

Memories of Tyrrell and GreenTo coincide with John Hansard Gallery's opening of Embodied Memories (9 May 2012) in the temporary John Hansard Gallery Central, City Eye was delighted to launch Memories of Tyrrell and Green. The film, shot and edited by Sam Taylor whilst working as Production Graduate at City Eye, documents early stages of the project and gives insight to some of the stories and memories shared by former staff and customers of Southampton's old Tyrrell & Green department store. These recollections inspired the startling works created by artist Jennifer Anyan in Embodied Memories.
