1 Year of City Eye Film Network

10/5/2023

On Tuesday May 9, City Eye's revived Film Network celebrated the its first birthday in style with an engaging talk by science fiction Writer & Director Chris Reading.

Chris gave an insightful and thought provoking talk that spanned his career, including his involvement in ALIEN: Containment, a short film created in partnership with 20th Century Fox to celebrate 40 years of the Alien franchise.

Read more about this exciting talk and the topics covered, including how Chris uses Artificial Intelligence to enhance his productions, here.

A Network that reaches across the Solent region!

Over the last twelve months, our Film Network has offered filmmakers from across the region the chance to meet and converse with likeminded souls, build a crew and enjoy an array of interesting talks from emerging film talent.  City Eye Executive Director, Susan Beckett, is 'delighted that we have welcomed industry professionals and aspiring talent from the Solent and wider region.  This is really demonstrating the growth of film and related media in the area, reflecting wider UK trends. We are thrilled that City Eye in 2023 is supporting and enabling people to make connections and create new work just as it has done for the last 37 years.'

The new City Eye Film Network launched in June 2022 and we were delighted to welcome 40 filmmakers, writers, actors, animators and digital creators to share their stories.

The following month, in July, attendees heard from our sponsor and CEO of Camera Crate, Ben Grace.  Ben detailed his recent experience in crafting 'Lost & Found' a 12 minute short film made from 9 rolls of expired Plus-X super 8 film, discontinued since 2010. Thank you Ben for your support and good luck with the film!

In August, musicians DiElle and Chris Wood told fascinating stories of their work, composing for a wide variety of films, including an upcoming documentary called Instinctive: An Archer’s Journey. To hear more about DiElle and Chris, check out the Blue Moggy Podcast (recorded in the City Eye sound suite), where you can listen to their conversation with regular network attendee and Blue Moggy Director, Rachel Stephens.
In September, we welcomed writer and director Caroline Sax. Caroline has worked as Script Supervisor on over 40 films with some of the industry's most diverse and celebrated directors and actors. Caroline delighted attendees with the story of her first ever job in film - working for legendary filmmaker, Stanley Kubrick on the set of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In October, we were joined by Dr Roy Hanney, Associate Professor and Course Leader of Media Production at Solent University. Roy answered questions on how to push forward a development strategy for film & HETV production and distribution in the Solent region. Roy returned to the Film Network in January as Mission Co-ordinator for DV Mission 48 Hour Challenge to launch this year's competition.

A Network that continues to grow!

February's Network fell on Valentine's Day, and attendees got to enjoy a session of intense  Speed Networking.  A great way for attendees to meet and get to know each other a little better!

In March, we were joined by filmmaker and Network member Johan Nayar, who shared the sizzle for his in-progress documentary The Banjo Boys about about an African dance folk duo who perform with homemade instruments across the world.

Throughout the year, we have also offered several
relaxed and less formal occasions. November, December and April's sessions allowed our attendees a chance to catch up and share what they've been working on.
We would like to thank everyone that has attended the City Eye Film Network over the last year, and in particular must thank all of our wonderful and generous speakers for giving their time and sharing their stories.  Thank you once again to the amazing Camera Crate for sponsoring this activity through the year.

What next?

The City Eye Film Network will continue to offer a space for filmmakers across the region - and beyond - to come together, share their experiences and build connections.  Attendees will enjoy a variety of industry speakers from disciplines that span the entire breadth of film, television and digital media production. There will also be opportunities to view and provide feedback on test screenings, and be the first to enjoy local, independent productions.

The next City Eye Film Network will take place Tuesday 13 June, 7pm-9pm at City Eye. Book for free now.
