The Sound of Silents

We all know that the music can make or break our experience of a film.  Even now, with special effects and 3D, the film score continues to be the thing that transports us to the world on the screen and has us on the edge of our seats.

Commencing on Sunday 4 March 2012, City Eye and Turner Sims - as part of Art at the Heart - presented The Sound of Silents, a series of events and activities that celebrated the wonderful marriage of film and music.  The season included classics of the silent era, opportunities to learn and be inspired and an exciting finale on 31 March 2012 in Guildhall Square - an event that showcased a programme of music and short films, produced specifically for the event by professional composers, music groups and students of all ages.

The Sound of Silents: Charlie Chaplin - City Lights (1931)

Date: 4th March 2012
Venue: City Gallery Lecture Theatre

Presented as part of Southampton's Musical Alphabet coordinated by Turner Sims - www.turnersims.co.uk

The Sound of Silents: The Best of Bristol's Slapstick Festival, Buster Keaton's Masterpiece feature The General (1926) plus classic shorts

Date: 25th March 2012
Venue: Turner Sims

With live improvised musical accompaniment from renowned multi instrumentalist Stephen Horne on keyboard, accordion and flute.

The Sound of Silents: Grande Finale

Date: 31 March 2012

A fabulous day that celebrated films and music, composers, live performances and bands ...

... with all taking place in the Groovy Movie solar-powered cinema tent which was located on the site for Southampton's new arts complex (the old Tyrrell & Green department store) in Guildhall Square at the heart of Southampton's Cultural Quarter!

Intermingling with the wonderful feature films was a really exciting collection of short films and new musical scores. With archive treasures from Wessex Film and Sound Archive and Hampshire Cricket, along with artists films, animations, archive and contemporary dramas - all complemented by new music from composers, bands, choirs and even an iPad Orchestra - the day provided a rich opportunity to enjoy and share in the celebration of music and film together.
