City Eye is an independent charity that inspires and supports individuals and communities to experience and be changed by film
Welcome to this online document - this is not our website, or a preview of our future website. What we would like to do here is share with you some of our work this year with regards to our organisational development. You are our supporters, friends and partners and we hope this page offers a view of the positive future envisaged for City Eye as well as some of the context and history that has informed this work.
City Eye has faced significant challenges in recent years. In 2018 Studio 144 opened its doors to the public, but our position in the complex was not secure. After years of being immersed in the preparation for this moment City Eye was unable to launch and we were unable to fully deliver our core programme of activity.
The Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 brought its own challenges. City Eye rose to these with the delivery of online initiatives and projects, a fully remote SFW 2020 and the recommencement of workshops in a safe and supportive environment when it was appropriate to do so.
The building, while not in use during this time, remained at the forefront of City Eye’s strategic considerations. We remain committed and confident that a positive resolution is in sight. We so look forward to a time – hopefully in the not too distant future – when City Eye is fully operational and we are able to express our organisational vision to its full extent.
To support this moment and to ensure that City Eye is resilient and dynamic whatever the future might bring, we are currently developing a robust five year business plan under the key themes of sustainable growth and consolidating ambition.
As part of this process we revisited and reconfirmed our vision for City Eye's future. The core elements that articulate City Eye’s work: Inspire / Collaborate / Create / Celebrate have underpinned this thinking. We have crafted a new statement of intent - of who we are, and created an exciting new show reel demonstrating some of our work.
We are delighted to share both of these with you now and would also like to draw your attention to our Trustee Pack which can be found here. City Eye is currently governed by a committed and enthusiastic board of trustees. We are looking to recruit additional trustees to join this team; increasing the representation, diversity and skillset of our board is a key component in ensuring we have a strong base from which we can continue to grow.

Inspire |
For over thirty five years City Eye has championed and encouraged those working, playing and experimenting with film in Southampton and its surrounding region. We offer professional development, support, training, screening events and networking opportunities to people working in the industry and those that aspire to. We recognise the difficulties and discrimination individuals and communities can face. City Eye strives to actively challenge these through our work and our approach. This is our past and our future.

Collaborate |
Create |
We believe film experiences should be enjoyed by everyone and we enable this through a year-round programme of open access events. We work on specific projects with individuals, schools, arts organisations, youth services, health providers, community groups and charities. We support people to achieve their filmmaking and digital goals whatever they may be. We are committed to ensuring that anyone can access our activities and facilities without barriers or discrimination.
|
We are documentary makers, story tellers, animators, artists. We work with individuals, organisations and communities to explore ideas and experiences, and we share these through film and digital technology. We make films to meet the needs of the people we are working with; responding to specific briefs or more fluidly developing an approach in collaboration with our clients. We engage with some groups in an immersive way; facilitating the creation of moving image that resonates with the community to which it belongs.
|
Celebrate |
At City Eye, we love film. We are dedicated to the promotion and development of film and digital culture in the region. We run a programme of film events throughout the year and we present an annual festival which is packed full of screenings, talks, workshops and competitions. We also celebrate, through all our work, the transformational process of filmmaking; the learning and development of the individuals we work with, their participation and personal achievement.
