City Eye is an independent charity that inspires and supports individuals and communities to experience and be changed by film
City Eye Limited is an independent charity, based in Southampton and governed by a board of Trustees. It began life in 1986 as the Southampton Film and Video Cooperative. Its mission then was a dedication to filmmaking and screening opportunities, workshops and educational activities, networking and ideas-sharing. While there have been many, many changes – not least in the name and branding – the essence of that mission rings true today.
Identifying a need in the community for more opportunity to showcase work, City Eye launched Southampton Film Week in 2008. It was the first of its kind in the city and remains at the forefront of Southampton's festival programme.
In addition to showcase opportunities, City Eye has developed the festival over the years to incorporate workshops, discussions, awards and - with cultural partners - a vibrant programme of arts and film.
Our show-reel and statement of 'who we are' give insight to our most recent work and, we hope, a glimpse of the exciting future ahead as we plan for the next phase of our development.

Inspire |
For over thirty five years City Eye has championed and encouraged those working, playing and experimenting with film in Southampton and its surrounding region. We offer professional development, support, training, screening events and networking opportunities to people working in the industry and those that aspire to. We recognise the difficulties and discrimination individuals and communities can face. City Eye strives to actively challenge these through our work and our approach. This is our past and our future.

Create |
We believe film experiences should be enjoyed by everyone and we enable this through a year-round programme of open access events. We work on specific projects with individuals, schools, arts organisations, youth services, health providers, community groups and charities. We support people to achieve their filmmaking and digital goals whatever they may be. We are committed to ensuring that anyone can access our activities and facilities without barriers or discrimination.
|
We are documentary makers, story tellers, animators, artists. We work with individuals, organisations and communities to explore ideas and experiences, and we share these through film and digital technology. We make films to meet the needs of the people we are working with; responding to specific briefs or more fluidly developing an approach in collaboration with our clients. We engage with some groups in an immersive way; facilitating the creation of moving image that resonates with the community to which it belongs.
|
Celebrate |
At City Eye, we love film. We are dedicated to the promotion and development of film and digital culture in the region. We run a programme of film events throughout the year and we present an annual festival which is packed full of screenings, talks, workshops and competitions. We also celebrate, through all our work, the transformational process of filmmaking; the learning and development of the individuals we work with, their participation and personal achievement.
