12/48 Countries - John Hansard Gallery

In May 2018, John Hansard Gallery opened an exhibition of works by the renowned international artist Gerhard Richter, in partnership with ARTIST ROOMS. With focus on Richter's work '48 Portraits', which depicts 48 influential figures from the 19th and 20th centuries, all male and from central Europe, John Hansard Gallery invited 12 University of Southampton students from 12 countries into the gallery to respond to the work. The students created responses in their native tongue to '48 Portraits', presenting a figure from their home countries whom they would put forward as a 49th Portrait.
