British
Filmmakers set to maximise European Co-production opportunities with
Cine Euro Training Programme
Screen
South and Skillset, in partnership with Cine Regio and Film Export
UK, are delighted to announce the launch of the Cine-Euro Co-Production
Training Programme. The programme has received further support from
Edinburgh International Film Festival, Lee & Thompson Lawyer Firm,
Sarajevo International Film Festival, Screen International and Pinewood
Studios. Cine-Euro is a 9 month programme which will aim to assist
8 UK producers to develop, market, finance and enable European Partnership
for European Co-Productions. The programme will receive full support
from The CineRegio network as well as training support from
Film Export UK, the association of sales companies with UK offices.
The programme will include attendance at The Edinburgh International
Film Festival and two further European International Film Festivals,
to be instructed by the Cine-Regio Network.
Starting
in June 2008 and running over 9 months, Cine Euro will comprise a
comprehensive training programme consisting of 12 events over the
following 9 months. One to one surgeries will take place throughout
the programme at regular intervals with award winning producer Pippa
Cross (Shooting Dogs, My Left Foot), to include both development and
business co-production advice specific to the producers needs.
Two initial training seminars will be held at Pinewood Studios in
June and will focus on the business of co-productions. This will be
followed by attendance of Edinburgh International Film Festival where
the 8 producers will be introduced to four members of Cine-Regio who
will be able to advise on the regional funds available in their country.
The
programme will be officially launched at an evening event to be held
at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. E-mentors, British producers
with experience of co-productions, will be partnered to each producer
to give guidance for the remainder of the programme. In August 2008,
the UK producers will be taken to the Sarajevo International Film
Festival as part of CineLink. A further networking session will be
held at the London International Film Festival. In September 2008,
Film Export UK will deliver two further training seminars supported
by UK Sales Agents who will assist in delivering training about Marketing,
Sales and Closing The Deal, a virtual co-production deal
with the support of the law firm, Lee & Thompson, who are one
of the sponsors of the programme. The Producers will be taken to the
Berlin International Film Festival 2009 where they will meet with
financiers alongside their new European Production partners.
Important
Note: The Cine-Euro programme is open to applicants from all over
the UK.
Jo
Nolan, CEO, Screen South:" Screen South is very pleased to be
working with a fantastic group of partners to deliver this innovative
programme for Producers from all over the UK. I am looking forward
to seeing a diverse group of feature projects launched to the international
market place and some realistic new international business opportunities
develop as a result."
Janine
Marmot, Director of Film, Skillset: "Its crucial that emerging
UK talent is introduced to the international market at an early stage
in their careers. And it is essential that producers are able to navigate
their way through the complexities of co-productions. The Cine-Euro
programme provides an excellent opportunity to do this, and Im
delighted that Skillset is able to support the initiative."
Charlotte
Appelgren, Secretary General, Cine Regio, Sweden comments: "We
at Cine-Regio, would like to encourage interregional and cross-border
co-operation. This includes stimulating artistic, creative and technical
exchange throughout Europe. This new training initiative developed
by Screen South is a unique opportunity to strengthening the co-development
and co-production of films between regions, promote the film sector
and establish new international friendships and contacts"
Charlie
Bloye, Chief Executive , Film Export UK "International sales
and distribution companies were thinking globally and acting locally
long before the motto was coined, so this initiative seems long overdue.
Making connections between filmmakers is a valuable precursor to connecting
with audiences in our continent and beyond."

guidelines and applications will be available on the Screen South

SCREEN SOUTH APPOINTS JO NOLAN AS NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE
Screen
South today announced the appointment of Jo Nolan as the new Chief
Executive. Jo takes over running the regional screen agency for the
South of England from Gina Fegan.
Graham
Benson, Chair of Screen South announced: "Gina has done a brilliant
job launching and then running Screen South. I'm confident that Jo
will imaginatively and creatively continue to build on these firm
foundations. She has the unanimous support of the Board."
Jo
has been Deputy Chief Executive and Head of Regional Development and
Production at Screen South since November 2004. Prior to this she
was Head of Regional Development and Skills for the agency. Jo's background
includes producing and company management across a wide spectrum of
film, media and arts; including theatre, publishing; design and training
both nationally and internationally. She has also worked in project
and event management from comic art galleries to corporates and local
authorities. Jo has extensive experience in independent film production,
having worked in most roles from Art Department to first AD and Producing.
She has delivered over 50 productions including features, award winning
shorts, corporate videos and music promos, including the first interactive
music DVD for acclaimed band "Orbital" which won international
industry acclaim. Jo studied for her BA Hons Expressive Arts in Brighton
and PG Dip /MA in New Media & Film in Birmingham.
"I'm
thrilled to be leading Screen South at an exciting time" said
Jo. "We are now beginning to see the effects of three years work
empowering filmmakers to deliver excellence from the region. New filmmakers
from the South East are really achieving. As well as supporting Andrea
Arnold's Oscar success we now have two films made by regionally supported
filmmakers, Jan Dunn and Tom Clay, celebrating their British feature
premieres at Edinburgh International Film Festival next month."
Since
joining Screen South, Jo has set up Screen South's Good Foundations,
an innovative feature producer led development programme, which is
now in its third phase and has led several international market trade
and talent missions. "Programmes like these are a chance to extend
the successful work Gina and I had started in terms of networking,
increasing opportunities for employment in film and pathways into
the industry. By setting up projects like Ready 2 Go and Good Foundations,
we are ensuring filmmakers across our region are market ready and
viable."
As
Film Coordinator with the Kent International Film Festival, Jo managed
the Coastal Cinemas and Kent Filmmakers Networks, helping filmmakers
develop projects and supporting local screenings. "I scratched
the surface and found a fantastic wealth of filmmaking talent in the
region, which is a vibrant and exciting place to work" she said.
Jo was responsible for bringing inspirational filmmakers like Andrea
Arnold - who won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short this
year for her film WASP - to work with local schools. "I see great
value in bringing really good professional filmmakers into the community
to raise people's aspirations and skills" Jo said. She is passionate
about increasing opportunities for young people to get involved in
film.
Jo
has an excellent knowledge of and understanding of film related issues
within the industry and the South East of England. "The Screen
South region is a rich resource with world class studios at Pinewood,
Shepperton and Maidstone as well as wonderful landscapes for location
filming. There's a wealth of talented filmmakers and skilled crew
here. I want them to feel confident they can make a success in the
industry from their regional base, and maximise opportunities with
national and international partners. At a time when the film industry
is going through some significant changes, it would be fantastic if
we can encourage a thriving culture of small businesses and freelancers
creating content across traditional and new platforms: TV, the web,
SMS or games, but who are also making important feature films that
will become part of our film heritage. Gina Fegan has done a great
job establishing Screen South; our job now is to consolidate her work
by nurturing and brokering opportunities for those unique voices that
will make the next, Nil By Mouth,, Dog Soldiers, Cold Mountain, Billy
Elliot or Harry Potter."
Screen South will continue to work closely with Gina Fegan, who is
leaving to take up a new role as Chief Executive of the South East
Media Network, the SEEDA supported sector group for the digital content
industries in the South East.
Funded
by the UK FILM COUNCIL's Regional Investment Fund, Screen South's
mission is to develop a dynamic environment in which film and media
culture can flourish through the Government Office of the South East
region (Kent, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire,
East and West Sussex and the Isle of Wight).
