Screen South jointly secures ‘Training Pools’ fund

Screen South, in partnership with South East Media Network (SEMN), Wired Sussex and Skillset, secured a new training fund worth £225,000, from SEEDA. The funding programme will be project managed by SEMN, who led the bid, on behalf of the digital content sector. The training sessions will be designed and delivered by Screen South and Wired Sussex. Skillset will provide advice on programme evaluation and quality assurance. The programme will cover skills for product and market innovation and will be aimed at developers and producers across the South East, in film, television, online and interactive content, games and all other digital content sectors.

The training project will be funded by SEEDA through its Training Pools initiative. Each partner will be a member of the Project Advisory Group, which will meet regularly.

‘Screen South is delighted to be working with SEMN, Wired Sussex and Skillset on this interactive training programme’ says Screen South CEO Jo Nolan. ‘It’s a great opportunity for film and television companies to really get to know their counterparts in games and other digital interactive companies as well as learn about new business models and new markets’

The period from February to May 2007 inclusive will be devoted to the marketing and recruitment of participating companies with the training programme itself starting in June 2007 and running for 12 months.

The training programme will be delivered through seminars, masterclasses, intelligence exchange sessions, a peer-to-peer mentoring partnership programme and industry events. The seminars will be designed to impart knowledge; the masterclasses to develop underlying skills; the intelligence exchange sessions and mentoring programme to share industry know-how and promote partnership development; and, the industry events to impart inspiration.

Subject to fair access to each event, companies may send more than one employee to each training session and different employees to different sessions as suits their business requirements. If an average of 3 employees from each companies engages in the programme in some way then between 90 and 120 employees will participate. SCREEN SOUTH APPOINTS JO NOLAN AS NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Screen South today announced the appointment of Jo Nolan as the new Chief Executive. Jo takes over running the regional screen agency for the South of England from Gina Fegan.
Graham Benson, Chair of Screen South announced: "Gina has done a brilliant job launching and then running Screen South. I'm confident that Jo will imaginatively and creatively continue to build on these firm foundations. She has the unanimous support of the Board."

Jo has been Deputy Chief Executive and Head of Regional Development and Production at Screen South since November 2004. Prior to this she was Head of Regional Development and Skills for the agency. Jo's background includes producing and company management across a wide spectrum of film, media and arts; including theatre, publishing; design and training both nationally and internationally. She has also worked in project and event management from comic art galleries to corporates and local authorities. Jo has extensive experience in independent film production, having worked in most roles from Art Department to first AD and Producing. She has delivered over 50 productions including features, award winning shorts, corporate videos and music promos, including the first interactive music DVD for acclaimed band "Orbital" which won international industry acclaim. Jo studied for her BA Hons Expressive Arts in Brighton and PG Dip /MA in New Media & Film in Birmingham.

"I'm thrilled to be leading Screen South at an exciting time" said Jo. "We are now beginning to see the effects of three years work empowering filmmakers to deliver excellence from the region. New filmmakers from the South East are really achieving. As well as supporting Andrea Arnold's Oscar success we now have two films made by regionally supported filmmakers, Jan Dunn and Tom Clay, celebrating their British feature premieres at Edinburgh International Film Festival next month."
Since joining Screen South, Jo has set up Screen South's Good Foundations, an innovative feature producer led development programme, which is now in its third phase and has led several international market trade and talent missions. "Programmes like these are a chance to extend the successful work Gina and I had started in terms of networking, increasing opportunities for employment in film and pathways into the industry. By setting up projects like Ready 2 Go and Good Foundations, we are ensuring filmmakers across our region are market ready and viable."

As Film Coordinator with the Kent International Film Festival, Jo managed the Coastal Cinemas and Kent Filmmakers Networks, helping filmmakers develop projects and supporting local screenings. "I scratched the surface and found a fantastic wealth of filmmaking talent in the region, which is a vibrant and exciting place to work" she said. Jo was responsible for bringing inspirational filmmakers like Andrea Arnold - who won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short this year for her film WASP - to work with local schools. "I see great value in bringing really good professional filmmakers into the community to raise people's aspirations and skills" Jo said. She is passionate about increasing opportunities for young people to get involved in film.

Jo has an excellent knowledge of and understanding of film related issues within the industry and the South East of England. "The Screen South region is a rich resource with world class studios at Pinewood, Shepperton and Maidstone as well as wonderful landscapes for location filming. There's a wealth of talented filmmakers and skilled crew here. I want them to feel confident they can make a success in the industry from their regional base, and maximise opportunities with national and international partners. At a time when the film industry is going through some significant changes, it would be fantastic if we can encourage a thriving culture of small businesses and freelancers creating content across traditional and new platforms: TV, the web, SMS or games, but who are also making important feature films that will become part of our film heritage. Gina Fegan has done a great job establishing Screen South; our job now is to consolidate her work by nurturing and brokering opportunities for those unique voices that will make the next, Nil By Mouth,, Dog Soldiers, Cold Mountain, Billy Elliot or Harry Potter."

Screen South will continue to work closely with Gina Fegan, who is leaving to take up a new role as Chief Executive of the South East Media Network, the SEEDA supported sector group for the digital content industries in the South East.

Funded by the UK FILM COUNCIL's Regional Investment Fund, Screen South's mission is to develop a dynamic environment in which film and media culture can flourish through the Government Office of the South East region (Kent, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire, East and West Sussex and the Isle of Wight).

FINAL CUT – 2005
BRIGHTON FESTIVAL: CALL FOR FILMS
This is a general call for submissions to Final Cut's screening events in the 2005 Brighton Festival. Last year, they showcased over 50 new shorts at different venues around the city and this year they aim to be even bigger. All screenings include their successful new Trailer Trash section of teasers for new and soon-to-be-completed shorts plus film-inspired VJ sets from top Brighton video artists.
If you would like to submit a film and/or teaser, please visit the Final Cut website for a submission form. The deadline for receipt of films and associated materials is Friday, April 15th but don't send screeners: all they want is a screening-quality DVD or miniDV. Films not selected for the festival will automatically be considered for inclusion in one of their regular monthly events.
Final Cut website: www.finalcut.gb.com

Submissions are now being accepted for The Smirnoff Experience Reel Talent Award.
Created by The Hospital in Covent Garden, this outstanding award provides a truly unique opportunity for aspiring filmmakers. Free to enter, the competition is for 3 prizes worth more than £10,000 each. The deadline for submissions is 22 April 2005. Full entry rules and an application form can be found on www.reeltalentaward.co.uk
Screenplays must have a genuine musical heartbeat and be clearly original in demonstrating how music shapes and inspires the story. This is not a call for pop videos or literal interpretations of well-known songs, but a challenge to represent the character of music through vision and storytelling. Naturally, only the most innovative and emotive will be selected.
Three teams of writer/directors and producer will be invited to attend an intensive residential script development course run by leading filmmakers' organization The Script Factory, before being granted £8,500 each to produce a 5-minute film.
One-to-one mentoring by established writers, directors and composers as well as use of The Hospital's studios and other production facilities will all form part of the prize. Award winning production house Intrepido will also provide support throughout the programme. The three short films will premiere at VIP events at The Hospital in Covent Garden and be offered international distribution agreements. One winning film will also be entered into a series of prestigious international film festivals.
The Smirnoff Experience Reel Talent Award partners include The Script Factory, The Independent on Sunday, Intrepido and Shorts International.
