BIOGRAPHIES
Glenda
I
have been a mental health service user since 1991, I was also a volunteer
with Eastleigh and District Mind (now merged with Southampton and New
Forest Mind to form Solent Mind) for almost 12 years, with my last 4 years
there as Chairperson.
I
am still involved as a volunteer in mental health services and sit on
steering panels around Recovery and PIP, deliver mental health awareness
training and speak at conferences amongst other things.
One
of the things I am currently working on is my PIP (Persons Individual
Plan) which is based on the Wellness Recovery Action Plan, as part of
this plan we look at what helps us to stay well as well as many other
aspects within the plan.
Being
a member of 'Making a Scene' our drama group, is very important to me
and plays a large part in my PIP as part of what helps me to stay well.
We work in many different ways to explore our world. The drama group is
not a prescribed mental health service, members join through choice, it
is not a therapy it is an interesting, enjoyable and fun way of looking
at ourselves and the world in which we live.
The
drama group also crosses over into the other areas of my life in that
we have been involved in delivering Mental Health Awareness Training in
schools, colleges etc and run workshops at the Recovery Conference as
well as producing videos and performing live.
I
love being a member of this amazing group and feel that it has an important
role to play in Recovery.

My mania started after a lot of pressure. I was studying psychology, Spanish
and English literature at the time when I hit madness. Infact I was doing
very well thank you with my degree work when I realised how close to the
edge I was. Even passed my first term psychology exams!
I was reacting extremely badly to music
..I called it p.m.t
..my
friends called it a cause for concern. To jump out of your skin for no
apparent reason seemed a little odd to them. Now, a decade later, i have
tried and tested methods to cope with stress. I am a music teacher and
working on drama workshops for all walks of life, perform as a singer
hoping to take a degree and living with manic depression.

I
have been living with clinical depression for most of my adult life, but
perhaps only acknowledging it as a proper illness over the last decade.
The attitudes of others, and lack of self-esteem and insight on my part,
have all hindered my ability to remain on an even keel in the past.
I am a mother, I hope a fairly successful one, and work part-time for
a mental health charity. I am also studying French in a mainstream college
class, and working towards a level 2 IT qualification. The IT classes
are delivered by a fantastic project called MIND-IT, a training project
run by Solent MIND.
I have done lots of voluntary work over the past 5 years or so, and still
help to run the drama group 'Making a Scene' plus a local children's group,
on a voluntary basis.
