The South Coasts Premier 48h Hour Film Competition

www.dvmission.co.uk
Applications are now being accepted for the fourth annual DV Mission 48hr Film Challenge. This year we will be returning to the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth for the premier night and after party. After the introduction of the Mission Briefing in 2008 we are now running a full one day of workshops prior to the event to support challenge participants absolutely free of charge. With support from this years sponsors, Film Hampshire and Screen South we have a new website and plan to make this the best 48 hour film challenge on the south coast.

In 2008 Derek Metters of the Workers Education Association (WEA) drew a title "Blood on the Moon"; the genre "B-Movie"; and a line of dialogue "oh go on then I will play your vicious little game" from the golden envelopes and launched last years challenge. Pressing the activation button Derek set the teams racing across the start line and off to a weekend of filmmaking with only 48hrs to make a two minute film for exhibition on the Sunday night at the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth.

Twenty three teams signed up to the event including professionals, amateurs, students, independents and pretty much all of the local filmmaking community in Portsmouth and surrounding area. There were even teams from as far afield as Buckinghamshire, that's around 250 people all making films over the weekend. While the event is intended to be fun "the spirit of DV Mission is the sex pistols meets the Oscars, its rock and roll filmmaking" says the event organiser Jinx Prowse. This is an unique opportunity that brings creatives from all walks of life together for a weekend of fun "its playtime for amateurs, students and professional filmmakers who get to spend the weekend doing something they enjoy" added Jinx Prowse.

Teams competed for the coveted 'Pompy Oscars" and this year event sponsors are offering a range of prizes for the Best Lo-tech and Best Pro-tech films (Pro-tech = using cameras costing more than £500 where as Lo-tech = cheap and cheerful). This years films will also be screened on the BBC Big Screen in Guildhall Square, Portsmouth and will be available to watch on-line via the DV Mission website along with the entries from the last three years: www.dvmission.co.uk.

The event is the biggest 48hr Film Challenge on the South Coast and hotly debated on filmmaking forums across Europe. This is a big boost for Portsmouth locally, regionally and internationally. To take part just go to the website, read the rules, sign up and send us your application form.

We would work with partners in the city to contact young people who have not previously had any experience of filmmaking but who were interested in the genre and exploring their city.

Budget available includes:
A total of £3,950 is available to include all fees, expenses, materials, travel, equipment hire and filming costs. Fees will be payable on the completion of the phases of the project, to be set out in an agreement with the City’s Arts and Cultural Development Service.

South East Media Network presents
Building Audiences Online
Soda Pictures: Film Distribution Company Case Study
Friday 30th January 2009, 2 for 2.30 to 5.00pm, London
Soda Pictures is a UK independent film distribution company focusing on world cinema and independent films working across theatrical and DVD release (www.sodapictures.com). This seminar, in the Digital Horizons 2012 programme series, will show how a small company with limited resources has used online social networking and viral marketing to integrate its business online and develop a highly synergistic relationship between its physical and virtual film distribution strategies.

Building on online audience is an integral part of film publicity and marketing. Looking beyond more traditional (often expensive) ‘above the line’ campaigns and to social media, online communities and open source tools, there are ways of: reaching niche and targeted audiences; creating a brand identity and audience communication channel; gathering and collating audience data; producing cost effective online campaigns; and, becoming part of a social media community and support network to chare ideas, tools, contacts and ideas.

Everyone welcome.

Further information: www.semn.org.uk and Digital Horizons 2012 or email digitalhorizons2012@semn.org.uk or call SEMN, the programme lead partner, on 01753 639211.

Hollywood Screenwriting – Avoiding Instant Killers
Presented by James Bartlett

Monday 24th November at 5pm - Southampton Solent University

In Hollywood, thousands of scripts land on the desks of producers, agents, actors and studio executives every day – how can you make sure that yours makes it past the first hurdle? This presentation will discuss some of the simple but fatal “red flag” mistakes that are instant killers for a script reader - and how to avoid them. It will focus on the differences between the US and UK film industries – state funded projects vs. a huge, highly competitive market with no funding - and the differences between working as a screenwriter in the US and UK.

The event will include a presentation by Jo Cassey, Skillset’s South East Regional Manager on its new six month pilot and will illustrate what you need to do to access Train to Gain subsidies.

The presentation will be preceded by refreshments and networking with an opportunity for delegates to visit exhibitors from a range of support agencies in the creative media sector including Train to Gain, The Royal Television Society, Skillset, Southampton Solent University.

Agenda
5.00pm Refreshments, exhibition and networking
6.00pm James Bartlett “Avoiding Instant Killers”
8.00pm Jo Cassey “Accessing Train to Gain Subsidies”
8.30pm Close

About the speaker: James Bartlett is a writer, story analyst and journalist living in Los Angeles. He currently reads for the Sundance Institute, the Nicholl Awards (AMPAS), the UCLA Professional Screenwriting Program, National Geographic Films and several UK regions. He was previously based in Belfast, where he received funding on two feature projects and won the Kodak Short Film Prize at the inaugural Belfast Film Festival in 1999. In 2001 he attended the ARISTA Story Workshop, then was asked to join ARISTA Development Belfast as a script reader and research consultant. In 2004 he moved to Los Angeles and worked in the marketing department at Landmark Theatres – the biggest independent US theatre chain - co-editing and writing their nationally-distributed FLM Magazine, and learning about distribution and marketing movies.

We Need Your Art.

We need your art for a Southampton based production to be shot in mid-April. The project is inspired by several experimental works, in particular the unique work of Derek Jarman. This is the first in a series of short pieces, which will be put together to form a feature film to be entered into national and international film festivals. The first of these pieces will be shot on multiple Super-8 cameras and will consult the life, death and rebirth of a work of art quite literally through a large public event. We would like to invite you to take part in this project.

We aim to invite a wide range of other artists to create a new piece, or donate an old piece of work to the project, which we will film, before destroying (with the creators knowledge and blessing). We hope to collect a sizable amount of work, which will be burnt in front of an audience (with permission from local council and fire services) on a large fireproof 'canvas'. As they burn the pieces will blend into one another and stick to the canvas. The canvas will then be raised at the end of the film to reveal the birth of a brand new and unique piece of art that can be displayed where the film is shown.

One of the unique prospects of this project is that when the film is completed, we will also form a traveling exhibition to co-promote and raise awareness for the project. One of the key pieces of the gallery space would be this film, demonstrating a unique way of exhibiting a film and liberating cinema as an art form.

Whilst we will burn your original piece of work, it will live on in both film form as well as be an integral part of a brand new and very unique piece of work.

Everyone involved in the film will be credited for their work and will receive a copy of the finished project on DVD upon its completion.

Your art could be something new or something old, you don't have to be great at painting or drawing to express yourself. Drawing, Sculpture, Painting, Film & Music (on tape or disc) Poetry, Photography, unmade beds... We Need Your Art.

THE GUERNICA CHILDREN DOCUMENTARY SCOOPS PRESTIGIOUS ROYAL TELEVISION SOCIETY AWARD.

The epic documentary film project The Guernica Children, directed and produced by Steve Bowles at Eye Witness Productions, won the award for Best Non-Broadcast Production at last night’s Royal Television Society Awards held in Southampton.

The film tells the story of the four thousand Basque refugee children who were evacuated to Britain in 1937 in the wake of the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.

At a packed event, Steve said how pleased he was that the film should be recognised in the city where the story had its beginnings just over seventy years ago. He dedicated the award to the memory of the Basque children and the ordinary people of Britain that cared for them.

The original documentary was broadcast by the BBC in 2005. Subsequently, Eye Witness Productions, in collaboration with the Basque Children of ’37 Association, received a generous grant from the Spanish Government to re-edit the film in to a feature-length format. The new film was screened for the first time at an emotional 70th anniversary commemoration with the surviving Basque children and their friends and families in Southampton in May 2007.

A public premiere of the film at a packed Harbour Lights cinema in Southampton in June, supported by Screen South and Southampton City Council was hosted by Screen South’s regional partner City Eye. The film impressed representatives of the British Federation of Film Societies (BFFS) who were in the audience and the film is now being distributed by the BFFS to film society and community cinemas across the country.

SCREENING OPPORTUNITY - SOUTHAMPTON SHOWS-OFFS

As part of the forthcoming Southampton Show-offs event over the weekend of 15 and 16 March, City Eye will be showcasing Southampton film talent in the Lecture Theatre at the Civic Centre.

We are always eager to give exposure to new films and new filmmakers so if you have anything ready, or close to being ready, for an audience please let us know. The film will need to be a product of Southampton, so if you don’t live here or have strong links to the city the film should have been shot or completed here. We are particularly looking for short films – which might be shown in their entirety – or extracts from a longer production. Each film will be introduced via a brief on screen description. The complete programme will run for an hour and we are eager to show a broad range of filmmaking. Whilst we don’t want to be entirely prescriptive about running time we equally don’t want the programme to be dominated by only one or two pieces – so the final programme will be decided taking into account the content and duration or the films provided to us. Films must be suitable for a general audience which may include children. We will be unable to screen work which contains copyrighted material (eg music!) unless you have clearance for this to be used and can prove this to us!

If you are interested in this opportunity for a screening please submit a copy of your film on mini-dv by 3rd March. Please also provide us with a brief description of the film and a little information about yourself and your filmmaking. Films may subsequently be collected from City Eye or can be posted back to you.

If you have any queries or require any further information please email or give us a call on 023 8067 7167.

FILM LOOKING FOR A LOCAL SOUND DESIGNER

The Abbadon File is a short film produced by local filmmakers in the Portsmouth area. Shot on HDV on a budget of £7000 in the tunnels under the Napoleonic Forts on the Hills behind Portsmouth last spring and currently nearing the final stages of post production.

The film is a supernatural spy thriller set in the 1950s and is loosely based on the story of Helen Duncan, the last women to be imprisoned under the 1720 Witchcraft act which was repealed shortly after. There is lots of info about her on the web if you google her name.

We are currently seeking a south coast based sound designer to work with our composer to finalise the sound post for the film. This is likely to include replacing guide dialogue, Foley, atmos and other effects.

We have access to audio editing facilities but need someone creative who can collaborate closely with the production team to drive them

The Pérez de Ayala Annual Lecture
The Guernica Children in Britain
A case study of humanitarian need versus perceived political expediency

given by Steve Bowles, film maker

Monday 21 May 2007
5:30pm refreshments; 6:00pm lecture
Avenue Campus, University of Southampton

Established with the generous support of the Cultural Office of the Spanish Embassy in recognition of the Spanish writer Ramón Pérez de Ayala, over the years the Pérez de Ayala Annual Lecture has welcomed a host of distinguished speakers to present at both the University of Southampton and the University of Portsmouth.

This year, Modern Languages in Southampton's School of Humanities is delighted to introduce award-winning Southampton-based film maker Steve Bowles. Director of Southampton film and media charity 'City Eye' and graduate of the University of Southampton , Steve produced and directed the epic documentary film The Children of Guernica, most recently shown on BBC4 to coincide with the eve of the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Guernica .

On 26th April 1937 the small Basque town of Guernica was bombed mercilessly by German planes supporting Franco's army during Spain 's bloody Civil War. The event would later be commemorated by Picasso's famous painting but the events at Guernica led directly to the arrival of four thousand Spanish children in Britain - the largest single influx of refugees ever to arrive in this country and the first to consist solely of children. The British Government did not want them here and it was only the pressure of public opinion that forced it, grudgingly, to allow the children to come.

On the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Guernica , we hear the remarkable story of the Basque children - of those who returned to Spain and those who made Britain their home. It is the story of a remarkable grass-roots organisation that cared for the children, and the conflict that this situation generated with a British Government that saw the children as a political embarrassment.

Co-operative Young Film-Makers - Update
Call For Entries - Closing date 6th July 2007
Film Festival - Fri 12th and Sat 13th October 2007

This year's Co-operative Young Film-Makers takes place on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 October, and the closing date for entries is 29 June.

Each year Co-operative Young Film-Makers holds a festival at the National Media Museum in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Over 100 short films made by children and young people are premiered in front of an audience of up to 300 people in the big-screen cinema.

This is one of the UK's leading film festivals for young people. It is run and funded by the Co-operative Group and is non-competitve and not for profit.

The festival offers young people the opportunity to receive feedback and advice on their work from film professionals, and participants can attend a wide range of events designed to inspire and encourage their film-making ambitions.

According to Edgar Wright, Director of hit films 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz', Co-operative Young Film-Makers is a fantastic opportunity for any young film-maker.

"First and foremost you get to see your work on the big screen. I saw all of my early shorts in front of packed houses at the National Media Museum. It was great and inspired me ever onward."

The festival is an excellent opportunity for budding film-makers to learn new skills, try out equipment, chat to experts, network and swap ideas.

Award winning Southampton-based film maker Steve Bowles' epic documentary

THE GUERNICA CHILDREN Wednesday, 25 APRIL – 23.00-23.40 BBCFOUR

Seventy years ago four thousand Basque children were evacuated to Southampton in the wake of the bombing of Guernica during Spain 's bloody civil war. With no help from the government of the time, local people in southern Hampshire organized accommodation, food and clothes for the refugees.

Five years in the making - the film tells their extraordinary story with eye witness accounts, previously un-screened archive film and dramatic reconstructions.

Following its broadcast on 25 April there will be a screening in May for all the Guernica Children and their families who are coming from all over the world to attend a n e vent at Southampton Solent University . This event will also provide an opportunity for the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at Southampton ’s Civic Centre.

In June, Southampton ’s Harbour Lights Picture House will be hosting the cinematic premiere of the film. Free tickets will be available from Southampton City Council Arts Development Officer, Christine Rawnsley , on 023 8083 2730.

Steve Bowles, a director of Southampton film and media charity City Eye, said

"This story started in Southampton with the arrival of children from the Basque region 70 years ago, and it is fitting that the film should have its first public screenings here where the story began.

The project has drawn on the skills and support of many local people, as performers, technicians and local expertise, including magnificent support form Southampton City Council's Oral History Unit.

This is a great example of collaborative film making at its best."

City Eye congratulates Steve on his achievement with this film and is delighted to offered continued support of his work and its screening.

Local Filmmakers Rise to the Challenge - PSYCHIC SPIES
Local filmmakers have got together to make a short film inspired by the story of Helen Duncan, a Scottish housewife and noted medium, who was arrested in Portsmouth for witchcraft during World War 2.
Writer and producer Roy Hanney says. “The story picks up after the war and tells the story of how Prudence, a middle aged psychic, is drawn into the world of cold war spies when she is recruited to find a missing secret agent. Accompanied by her spirit guide she enters the shadowy world of a master spy. Believing he is in control of the situation, it becomes apparent that the world of the spirits has a different story to tell.”
The action is all being shot at Fort Widley on Portsdown Hill, thanks to generous support for the film from the Peter Ashley Activity Centre. “An example of the great potential for locations around Portsmouth.” Roy adds as a note.

The idea came about after a chance meeting in the offices of Southampton Media agency City Eye and the idea grew into a film. Having worked with City Eye on the production of his last short “The Collector”, Director Lorne Guy was on the hunt for a project and saw the potential in the script right away.
Roy agrees that the City Eye connection has been important as has meeting Production Manager Chris McDermott who feels the film should be a catalyst. “It’s like a challenge to other filmmakers to get out and just make a film,” says Chris, who has a long history in Portsmouth having spent twenty years in the Navy before working as a professional filmmaker. He believes there is a lot of local talent around, while many of the local film and TV professionals have to go to London to work. He adds, “We want to say, come to Portsmouth to shoot your films”.

Pointing out film and TV costume hire business Sabre Sales in Castle Street as an example, Art Director Gez Stevens lists all the benefits of shooting in Pompey, “It’s all here, you can just get on with it”.
Aimed at short film festivals and DVD compilations, the film should be on your screens soon. Roy hopes to arrange a premier at the Churchillian on Portsdown Hill. “They have been so supportive and are providing all of the catering, so it would be nice to give them a party in return”.
Watch this space.

Production stills are available on request from Monday 19th March.

UK FILM COUNCIL SHORT FILM COMPLETION FUND 2006/07 LAUNCHES

The UK Film Council's New Cinema Fund (NCF) is now inviting individual filmmakers and production companies to apply to the 2006/07 Completion Fund. The fund is part of the New Cinemas Fund's programme to enable directors and producers to push their creative boundaries, develop new talent and to invest in short films that illustrate unique ideas and an innovative approach.

This is a £50,000 fund to support short films that have already been shot but lack the funds to finish. You can now apply to this fund and the closing date for entries will be Friday 17 November 2006.

Maya Vision International is the managing company responsible for short-listing and selecting the films in consultation with the NCF and will oversee all aspects of the completion process to contractual and physical delivery. Maya Vision International has produced a diverse range of dramas, documentaries, short films and feature films since it was formed in 1983, and has always been committed to supporting and nurturing emerging filmmakers across a variety of genres.

Eligibility

You can apply for funding from the Completion Fund if:

• you are an individual aged 18 years and over and a national or resident of the UK or you are a company registered and centrally managed in the UK ; and

• you have made a short film which requires completion funding and which:

· will have a final running time of less than 12 minutes (exceptionally 'short' films of longer duration may be considered); and

1. has been edited to a rough-cut or beyond and is available for viewing on DVD (or VHS); and

2. has main elements (e.g. producer, writer, director, location, story) which are substantially British in nature; and

3. when completed will be capable of being fully cleared for cinema, television, internet and festival exhibition throughout the world.

The Completion Fund is for genuine completion of a short film. It is not a 'print' fund and applications to transfer a finished film from one format to another format for the purposes of exhibition are not eligible for funding and will not be assessed.

For full details, guidelines and application forms see:

www.mayavisionint.com
and the UK Film Council’s website: www.ukfilmcouncil.org.uk/filmmaking/shorts/completionfund

A reminder again – the final date for us to receive entries is Friday 17 November 2006.

Portsmouth filmmaker looking for assistance

Roger Goldsmith- Biography.

I am a 'new writer' in my middle age, having given up engineering to write and make films. I recently won the first prize for medium length plays in the Margaret Langford playwriting competition. During May and June this year I attended a film school at Ealing studios, where I made my first short, a three-hander comedy entitled 'Helping'. Whilst my main interest is writing screenplays for TV and film, a number of which I am trying to find funding for currently, I have the desire to make a number of short films myself. The two projects listed below are my two projects for next year, whilst developing further screenplays.

'Speechless'
I plan to make 'Speechless' in Portsmouth, next spring. A short film (10 mins max.) telling the story of a stammering schoolboy, bullied by one of his classmates. I have contacted local schools, and will be developing contacts with them post the summer holidays. I anticipate that the shoot will be 2/3 days maximum. The locations will be inside the school, the playground and external areas, in a chauffer driven car, and the interior of a house. I am looking for a DOP and sound recordist for the shoot, and a Runner. I do not have any equipment, and will therefore require the crew to provide kit. I would like to film on DVD HD.

'Wedding Shots'
The same requirement for a crew applies to 'Wedding Shots', another short film I plan to make next spring. 10-12 minutes in length, the film comprises of two scenes, a wedding reception scene (a pub room will facilitate) and a suburban house. The film tells the story of secrets uncovered by a Mother about her new daughter-in-law, when she plays back a camcorder inadvertently left on during the wedding reception. The location of this film I have yet to establish. It could be shot in Portsmouth, but could equally be shot in London.

Roger can be contacted via email: roger.goldsmith@ntlworld.com

JOHN HANSARD GALLERY HOSTS RISING INTERNATIONAL STAR OF VIDEO ART

Ergin Çavuþoðlu: Point of Departure

John Hansard Gallery
4 May – 17 June 2006
ADMISSION FREE

Mesmerising, elegiac journeys: Ergin Çavuþoðlu’s film installations transform the gallery experience into something immersive and compelling.

Raised in Bulgaria as part of the Turkish minority and now based in London, Çavuþoðlu combines multiple projections and viewpoints, filmed in diverse, often marginalised locations. More ‘poetic description’ than documentary, these works reflect upon shifts in the global geopolitical order, often drawing upon the artist’s own personal experience of migration.

The exhibition features two new works - Point of Departure and Adrift. Point of Departure was filmed in both Stansted Airport and Trabzon Airport, Turkey, and contrasts the experience of transit and travel through the perspectives of two characters. Weaving together footage from both, he allows us to look again at the apparently ‘everyday’ act of crossing frontier points: these ‘non-places’ become strange, beautiful and unsettling.

Adrift provides a counter-point to Point of Departure's linear storyline. Intertwining footage shot across Europe and the United States, projected images cut between cities and seascapes, where disparate characters drift into apparently endless journeys. Intense and rhythmical, the work probes the history of migration, forced or otherwise.

For further details about the exhibition, visit www.hansardgallery.org.uk/exhibition/current.html

Producing Content for New Markets - Opportunites Provided by the Digital Marketplace

A discussion with John Dale and Ben Pullen

John Dale produces digital content for the public services, business, retail and leisure sectors as well as media for public spaces. He has wide experience of TV production for ITV, digital strategy development for the BBC and has been an advisor to HMG Cabinet Office on developing content for niche channels.

Ben Pullen combines acting with speculatively producing drama for a range of markets, both mobile and static. He is currently involved in a 15 minute drama shot on HD which he hopes to put on to mobile media via short episodes as well presenting a full version to other markets. He says he's learned a lot since the project began five months ago.

The session will:
consider the kinds of content which are likely to do well in this emerging marketplace;
offer practical experience of the possibilites and pitfalls;
discuss possible business models;
reflect on rights management issues generated by working in this way.

Innovative job share scheme launched for women in film

LONDON: A groundbreaking initiative to help women film practitioners returning to work was announced today by Skillset, Sector Skills Council. Timeshift will provide job sharing roles on film productions for teams of eight women with an allowance paid towards child care cost in addition to their salaries. The unique scheme is a part of A Bigger Future, the UK Film Skills Strategy, a five year joint initiative by Skillset and UK Film Council, funded by lottery money and industry investment, to address creative and skills development within the film industry.

Judy Counihan, Director of Film at Skillset, said:

“Timeshift is a landmark scheme set to break the mould in film production. Skillset’s research shows that women are under-represented in the production world, especially older women. And we all know the difficulties in juggling career and family responsibilities but this is especially true for women working in film where the freelance working patterns and irregular hours can make it impossible. This scheme will help female talent fulfil their potential and help the industry hang on to the experienced and skilled practitioners it needs to go forward.”

Skillset’s and the UK Film Council’s 2005 Feature Film Production Workforce Survey found that women make up 33% of the workforce. 35% of women earn less than £20,000pa compared to 18% of men. In the higher salary brackets 30% of men earn £50k+ compared with 16% of women. This is despite women being more likely to be qualified to graduate level than men (60% compared with 39%). There were almost no women in the camera, sound, electrical and construction departments while the majority of those working in make-up and hairdressing were women.

Candidates for Timeshift should have a minimum of 3 years working experience and must apply in teams of two in the following grades:

· Production Accountants;

· Assistant Production Accountants;

· Production Coordinators;

· Boom Operators;

· Production Design Assistants;

· Costume Assistants;

· Art Department Assistants;

· Prop Buyers;

· Locations Assistants;

· 3rd AD’s;

· Assistant Editors.

For further information and to download an application form please visit: www.skillset.org/timeshift or contact Arit Eminue on arite@skillset.org

Timeshift is backed by the European Social Fund Equal Programme.

A Bigger Future addresses the skills development of all jobs across film from script development through to exhibition (screening films in cinemas), covering both new entrants and professional development for the existing workforce. For more information on all A Bigger Future film skills initiatives visit www.skillset.org/film

The Flicks Short Film Café is an informal environment for screening: films produced by local filmmakers; touring programmes of shorts, curated evenings; and a networking event for people passionate about
film and filmmaking. The Flicks aims to celebrate the production of short films and inspire an active filmmaking culture in the region. Evenings start around 7.30 with a social drink in the bar before the
screening begins.

Often a filmmaker or curator will host the evening answering questions and introducing the films. The first half of the evening is usually around Forty Five minutes with a Twenty minute break before
concluding with the second half of the show. After the screening many of the regulars retire to the Nags Head to discuss the evening's films and network with other filmmakers.

THE GUERNICA CHILDREN
BBC SOUTH INSIDE OUT

26 September 2005. 7.30 BBC1
Director/Producer - Steve Bowles

In May of 1937 two young sisters - Carmen and Josefina - boarded a ship in Bilbao destined for Southampton. They were amongst four thousand other Basque children who were fleeing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War. It was, to this day, the largest single influx of refugees ever to arrive in this country and the first to consist solely of children.

The British Government did not want them here but in the wake of the bombing of Guernica it was forced to yield to public opinion and allow them to come, on the condition that no public finance would ever be made available to support them. With the Government refusing to help in any way, it was left to an enormous voluntary organization to look after the refugee children.

Like most of the refugees, the two sisters expected their stay to be brief. But the Civil War dragged on. When the war did finally end there was practically nothing to go back to and Britain was to become home for the rest of their lives.

Nearly seventy years on, Carmen and Josefina who made their homes here in the south, relect on an extraordinary chapter in history and pay thanks to the ordinary people that helped to care for The Guernica Children.

The Guernica Children scores big hit for BBC4.

The Guernica Children - a documentary film which tells the story of the Basque refugee children who were brought to Britain in 1937 to escape the horrors of the Spanish Civil War - was broadcast for the first time on BBC4 on April 24 to great acclaim.

The film was viewed by 140,000 people on its first showing - which represents a 1% market share - an exceptionally high figure for a documentary aired on a digital platform.

The Radio Times selected the documentary as one of its choices for the day and The Times described it as an 'extraordinary film'.

The project was seed-funded by Screen South in order to produce a promo which Director/Producer Steve Bowles of Eye Witness Productions Ltd. took to the major broadcasters. Screen South's regional partner, City Eye, also supported the production of the film.

THE GUERNICA CHILDREN

SUNDAY 24 APRIL
10pm - 10.40pm
BBC FOUR

Director/Producer - Steve Bowles

On 26th April 1937 the small Basque towm of Guernica was bombed mercilessly by German planes supporting Franco's army during Spain's bloody Civil War.

The children expected their stay to be brief, but the Civil War dragged on. Throughout their time in Britain, they were cared for, fed and housed by the efforts of a vast voluntary organization - an extraordinary display of selfless humanitarianism. By the end of the Spanish Civil War many of the children had literally nothing and nobody to go back to and remained in Britain for a life time.

This is the remarkable story of the Basque children - of those that returned to Spain and those that made Britain their home. It is the story of a remarkable grass-roots organization that cared for the children and the conflict that generated with a British Government that saw the children as a political embarrassment.

Four years research in both Britain and Spain has gone in to piecing together this extraordinary historical episode. Eye witness accounts are mixed with expert analysis, dramatic reconstruction and previously un-screened archive footage to tell, for the first time, the story of The Guernica Children.
