We are delighted to announce James Rose's film "Like A Bat Out Of Hell" which was supported through a City Eye Open Lens Award is making it's TV début.  We are thrilled for filmmaker James, who has worked tirelessly to get his vision on to the screen.  A big well done from all the team at City Eye, and we urge everyone to tune in and watch this remarkable film.

Below is James' press release and details on how you can see the film:

THE BAT TAKES HIS FIRST FLIGHT ON TV! NOVEMBER 2011

Hampshire based ‘disabled’ filmmaker, James Rose, has confirmed that his debut documentary film is to be aired on the Community Channel throughout December. The 26-year-old broadcasting graduate turned social entrepreneur has been told that his film will be shown to the nation five times in the coming weeks, including on New Year’s Eve.

The action-packed documentary short, Like A Bat Out Of Hell, follows James’ three-year quest to skydive for Comic Relief & Canine Partners  - a task which should have only taken a week to organise, bypassing other people's fears relating to his 'disability.'  The Skydive which was supported by Remarkable Group, Smith & Williamson, and Leigh Day & Co raised more than 5,000 which was split between the two charities

You will laugh, cry, and grit your teeth whilst you join James on his mammoth three year mission. At the time of filming, statistics showed that one child dies of Malaria every thirty-seconds.  However, this statistic has been revised to being every forty-five seconds.  With this in mind, James’ progress is tracked by counting the number of children who pass away as he bypasses all obstacles.

All this is overseen by James’ cheeky Canine Partners assistance dog, Nemo (now retired), standing on the side-lines, providing visual commentary as James pushes himself to the limits.  Vertical wind-tunnels, hanging out of helicopters; no task is too big for James to undertake to overturn his doctor’s decision.

James says:  “I’m so pleased to have my first film which I’ve produced and directed broadcast on TV!  It was an amazing experience making it and I have learnt so much about filmmaking, whilst meeting amazing people along the way!.  I am so grateful to the people at Screen South & City Eye who, frankly, put their trust in me to deliver such a complex and risky film project!

I am now building on this experience and have set up as a freelancer to continue to make films to educate and inspire audiences whilst helping to support and implement community projects using the profits I earn.  People can find out more about my projects and what I can offer by going to my website and watching my showreel at http://www.jamesrose.tv!”

The film will be broadcast at the following times on the Community Channel:

  • Tuesday 6th December 2011 at 22:00 and 1:00 on Sky channel 539 and Virgin channel 233
  • Thursday 8th December 2011 at 22:00 and 1:00 on Sky channel 539 and Virgin channel 233
  • Monday 12th December 2011 at 6:30am on Sky channel 539, Virgin channel 233 , and Freeview Channel 87
  • Thursday 15th December 2011 at 6:30am on Sky channel 539, Virgin channel 233 , and Freeview Channel 87
  • Saturday 31st December 2011 at 2011 (as part of the “best of Community Channel on NYE”).
James graduated in 2007 with a first class honours degree in Broadcasting, and is now an independent filmmaker, video editor, and sound designer based in Winchester.  Due to his so-called ‘disability’, he uses a head- to edit and sound design films as well as produce and direct projects.  With the support of the Hampshire School for Social Entrepreneurs and The Princes’ Trust, James has set up a non-profit production company with the profits going towards implementing & supporting entertainment and media projects within the local community

The news of the broadcast comes during the filming of Like A Bat Out Of Hell Live – a motivational presentation based on the film aimed at schools and corporates featuring a live Q&A session.  This spin-off project is being created in partnership with Simesco Ltd and will start touring the UK from early 2012.

Film society presents Pompey’s past

Portsmouth Film Society is taking part in the BBC series of events celebrating local history through archive film, in partnership with the Wessex Film and Sound Archive. Join PFS at the Omega Centre on Wednesday 16 November at 6pm for a look back at Portsmouth and Southsea’s history on the big screen.  The hour-long programme includes George VI’s coronation visit as recorded by Portsmouth Cine Club, a rare documentary The Way to the Sea (1936) introduced by Portsmouth historian Dr. Dave Allen, and a talk from local artist Jez Stevens whose project "No Diving" uses archival footage from local amateur filmmakers taken at the Hilsea Lido.

The Way to the Sea, made by Strand Films in 1936, was produced by one of the key figures of the pre-war documentary film movement, Paul Rotha (1907-1984).  It combines an impressionistic history of the South Coast and Portsmouth’s maritime heritage with reportage on the electrification of the London-Portsmouth railway line, culminating in state-of-the-nation reflections upon impending European conflict.  This fifteen-minute documentary features some fine photo-montage of the city and seaside, poetic commentary by W. H. Auden, and a musical score by Benjamin Britten.

Portsmouth Film Society’s Dr. Justin Smith is a film historian in the University’s School of Creative Arts, Film and Media.  “The Way to the Sea is a wonderfully evocative period-piece,” he says. “It captures the mood of the mid-1930s, celebrating industrial progress and the growth of popular leisure, and it puts historic Portsmouth centre stage, anticipating the city’s vital role in World War II.”

Entry is £2 or free for full PFS members.

Film Nation: Shorts is a competition that invites young people (aged 14-25) to make, and vote for, films celebrating the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Run in partnership with Panasonic, Film Nation: Shorts will introduce young people to film-making, support them in developing their talent, and give everyone who enters a chance to have their work screened around the UK. Winning films will be screened in front of the crowds in venues during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London in 2012.

The competition is accompanied by a UK-wide programme of workshops to provide extra help to young people to begin making films, develop their skills and meet other people to share ideas and develop projects.
