We felt it best to start straight away so we could put our new skills and knowledge into practice and so we decided to make two short films (one written by each of us).  We plan to enter them into an upcoming competition, giving us a timeframe and a deadline.'

Film planning is well under way for both films and now Rachel and Fay need some actors and crew.  So, if you are interested in einbg part of local short films being created in the next couple of months then please see the brief description below and get in touch.

Local Production Assistant/Sound Operator needed for short films currently in pre-production, to be filmed on 11th and 19th May. ]]><![CDATA[Online Launch - Memories of Tyrrell and Green film]]>Tue, 08 May 2012 06:18:01 -0800http://www.city-eye.co.uk/2/post/2012/05/online-launch-memories-of-tyrell-and-green-film.htmlTo coincide with John Hansard Gallery’s opening of Embodied Memories in the new John Hansard Gallery Central, City Eye is delighted to launch Memories of Tyrrell and Green.  The film, shot and edited by Sam Taylor whilst working as Production Graduate at City Eye, documents early stages of the project and gives insight to some of the stories and memories shared by former staff and customers of Southampton’s old Tyrrell & Green department store.  These recollections have inspired the startling works now created by artist Jennifer Anyan in Embodied Memories.

Embodied Memories was commissioned by the John Hansard Gallery and developed with City Eye through Art at the Heart, a partnership of key arts organisations in Southampton working to bring the city’s emerging cultural quarter to life.  The springboard for this commission has been Southampton City Council's plans to transform the old Tyrrell & Green site into Southampton's new arts complex, featuring a permanent city centre site for the John Hansard Gallery and City Eye.  The arts complex is set to open in 2015.

As part of the 75th anniversary commemoration of the Basque Children’s arrival in Southampton (1937-2012), Modern Languages and the Special Collections of the Hartley Library have organised a symposium focused on the interplay between history and memory as it is projected in film.  Come and join film directors, students and the protagonists of this evacuation story and contribute with your recollections and views to this exciting encounter that will provide a unique insight into key events that have marked a shared chapter in the history of Southampton, the Basque Country, Britain, Spain and Beyond.  Lunch will be available.

The festival will be an excellent opportunity for local filmmakers to meet with people who share their interest and a great chance to exhibit work and maybe even win a membership to the BFI or Shooting People.

This year’s festival will be taking place at the Eastleigh AMF Bowling Center and will screen a great range of first-time film work. From documentary to animation, we will be sharing and encouraging the new creative talent from the south, as well as screening short films from successful local filmmakers such as Gary Cassey director of Cass Productions, cinematographer Alex Nevill and Karen Gilchrist director of Redbird Productions.

Submissions are now closed but there are still tickets available through the website: www.getyourfilmout.com.

For those who are curious:
Throughout the early afternoon we will be screening the films with free entry which means that anyone can view your work, if they're bowling, sitting in the bar or just passing by. So if your booked into to bowl that afternoon, you are in for a treat!

For the filmmakers and enthusiasts:
From around 5pm the venue will suit itself up for the awards session. Films will be divided into 5 categories and we will be awarding Shooting People memberships to the best in each. In between category screenings we will hear from local industry professionals and successful filmmakers, who will share their experiences and screen some work of their own. Finally we will be awarding the best film of the evening a Membership to the BFI. 

For everyone:
The AMF Bowling Centre has a bar and serves food, so you can keep refreshed during the screenings! You can find parking for the venue in the swan centre or on the roadside nearby. There is also the Eastleigh Railway and Bus Station should you be traveling via public transport. The address is:

We start at 10.30 with Singin in the Rain on the site for Southampton's new arts complex (former Tyrrell and Green site) in Guildhall Square.  The beautiful Groovy Movie solar powered cinema tent is waiting patiently at this moment ready to welcome you to our day of movie indulgence.  Go to the Sound of Silents page for full details.

Absolutely not to be missed though is the Sound of Silents Showcase at 5.15pm when the wonderful new scores created by musicians, composers, school groups and students are premiered with their films.  A sneak preview last night while we were testing has blown us away.  Please don't miss it if you can be there...

Also showing is The Gold Rush at 2.30pm and Young Frankenstein at 8pm.  Jigfoot are performing their new score with Welcome or Welcome not at 12.30pm and JayetAl will also give a live performance this evening at 7.15 with Chris Marker's La Jetee...

We also have a programme at 1.30 which includes silent films produced by young people from across the region including Life with Two Sugars made with students at St Vincent College which has been nominated Film of the Month as part of Film Nation: Shorts and now goes forward to the final during the Olympics.  The winning film will be played as part of the Olympic festivities.

And finally, we are very proud that Catching Time a silent film produced on City Eye's Digital Filmmaking Course ha been completed this week snd will have a preview screening this afternoon following the Young Filmmakers Silents.

In this one day filmmaking workshop we will look at and get hands-on with animation, drama and green screen (used for special effects like making Harry Potter and his broomstick fly!) while exploring the imaginative world of filmmaking.

Film Nation: Shorts is a competition that invites young people (aged 14-25) to make, and vote for, films celebrating the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Run in partnership with Panasonic, Film Nation: Shorts will introduce young people to film-making, support them in developing their talent, and give everyone who enters a chance to have their work screened around the UK. Winning films will be screened in front of the crowds in venues during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London in 2012.

The competition is accompanied by a UK-wide programme of workshops to provide extra help to young people to begin making films, develop their skills and meet other people to share ideas and develop projects.
